Max Pechstein, Cows in a Meadow, 1923 by Atelier Liesjes

'An expressive, colourful watercolour/gouache depicting a sunny meadow scene: a group of cows (usually 4-5) grazing or standing in a green field, with a large, bright sun (dark circle with yellow rays) dominating the sky. The cows are stylised in blue and black, with simple shapes and shadows. The background shows rolling hills, trees in green and dark, and a cloudy sky in yellow, blue and grey. The radiant sun with rays (almost religious or cosmic) radiates hope, energy and vitality, typical of Pechstein's theme of recovery and connection with nature in the early 1920s. Hermann Max Pechstein (Zwickau, 31 December 1881 – Berlin, 29 June 1955) was a painter from Germany. Pechstein is considered an important representative of Expressionism. In 1918, after the First World War, Pechstein co-founded the Arbeitsrat für Kunst (Workers' Council for Art) and in 1922 he became a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts.
