Matterhorn, mountain in the Alps, Switzerland. A unique mountain landscape above village Zermatt. For me the Matterhorn is one of the most beautiful mountains in the world, not only because of its shape, but also because of the story. In 1865 the mountain was first climbed by the Englishman Edward Whymper. In a dramatic battle with his former friend the Italian Jean-Antoine Carrel he came first, but in the descent he lost four team members by a fall. The euphoria turned into a drama. The party in the village was discontinued, trials followed and the story still keeps busy. There were only losers except the village of Zermatt.
