Mary Magdalene, Jan van Scorel, c. 1530 oil on panel, h 66.3cm × w 76cm. Catalogue entry The woman is Mary Magdalene. She is recognised by the ointment jar, with which she is said to have cared for Jesus' feet. Van Scorel painted her as a seductive, luxuriously dressed courtesan, a reference to her alleged past as a prostitute. In her clothes, the influence of Italian painting, which Van Scorel had encountered on his trip to Rome, shines through.
