About "Marikenstraat Nijmegen"

by Henk Egbertzen

About the artwork

The Marikenstraat is a road in the city centre of the Dutch city Nijmegen and runs from the Burchtstraat to the Arsenal (Mariënburgsestraat). The Marikenstraat is one of the main shopping streets in the city centre.

The street was constructed between 1998 and mid 2000 according to a design by urban architect Sjoerd Soeters. Two levels were created with housing above. The right side, seen from Burchtstraat, was designed by Joris Molenaar whereby the facades of the houses differ in brick decoration. The building is interrupted on the upper level at the town hall by the Raadhuishof with the monument 'De Schommel' by Henk Visch in memory of the bombardment of Nijmegen on 22 February 1944. The left side was designed by Vera Yanovshtchinsky with in the street in a slight curve increasingly sloping forward facades. The Marikenstraat was officially opened on 15 September 2000.

In the extension of the Marikenstraat a passageway was made in the Arsenal and behind this the Moenenstraat was constructed. This allowed the shopping public to walk in a square. The street was named after Mariken by the city council after a consultation among 600 inhabitants and in contradiction to the commission on street naming that was in favour of Raadhuisstraat.
