This beetle species ( Trachelophorus giraffa ( Malagasy giraffe weevil) ) has an exceptionally long neck. The beetle is found exclusively in Madagascar ( endemic ). The neck of the male is two to three times longer than the neck of the female. The neck is mainly used to fight with other males. The winner acquires the right to mate with the female. The female lays an egg on the leaf of a specific plant (Dichaetanthera cordifolia or Dichaetanthera arborea) and rolls it up with her long neck and powerful legs. This provides her offspring with protection and a food source.
