The Hoofdtoren on the harbour of Hoorn on a quiet grey winter day in December 2016. The Hoofdtoren dates from 1532 and is built of Goberganger limestone and brick, and is one of the last surviving defences against attack from the Zuiderzee. The name is derived from the Wooden Head which was built in 1464, and after which the pier is also named. The Hoofdtoren is a national monument. Nowadays there is established a catering industry.
