About the artwork
Deventer looks beautiful in this photo, with its characteristic skyline along the wide, calm IJssel River. The Grote or Lebuinuskerk towers stately above the city, like a beacon of history and tranquillity. The river glistens softly under a partly cloudy sky, in which the light plays subtly with the clouds; a lively spectacle that adds depth to the atmosphere.
Along the left bank, a green strip of trees, grass and a few moored boats create a relaxed atmosphere. In the middle of the IJssel are small islands and markings, perhaps for shipping, that give the river landscape just that little extra character. On the right side of the picture, the old centre of Deventer is outlined, with charming buildings standing along the quay like a picturesque backdrop.
This composition emphasises the harmony between city and nature. Deventer breathes history, but at the same time feels lively and open. The perspective makes it seem as if the IJssel gently embraces the city, while the sky above tells a story of calm, movement and timeless beauty.
