The Wallonerkirche, also known as St Augustine's Church, is a Protestant church in Magdeburg's Old Town district. Alongside the cathedral, St Sebastian's Church and St Peter's Church, it is one of the few remaining historic churches in Magdeburg's Old Town that is still used for religious purposes. The Wallonerkirche was built as a monastery church of the Augustinian order at the end of the 13th century. In 1689, the church was handed over to the Walloon Reformed congregation. Together with the Magdalen Chapel and St. Peter's Church, the Walloon Church dominates Magdeburg's city skyline on the banks of the Elbe.
Magdeburg, the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt, is a central German city on the River Elbe. Magdeburg's Gothic cathedral is located in the centre and is the burial church of Otto the Great, the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The Museum of Cultural History traces the importance of the city in the Middle Ages with exhibitions on archaeology and local history. The Romanesque-style monastery of Our Lady houses a contemporary art gallery and a sculpture park.
