Magdeburg, the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt, is a central German city on the River Elbe. Magdeburg's Gothic cathedral is located in the centre and is the burial church of Otto the Great, the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The Museum of Cultural History traces the importance of the city in the Middle Ages with exhibitions on archaeology and local history. The Romanesque-style monastery of Our Lady houses a contemporary art gallery and a sculpture park.
The Magdeburg Horseman was created around 1240 and probably depicts Emperor Otto I. The two allegorical figures at his side are two maidservants. One holds a shield with the imperial eagle, the other holds a flag lance, two symbols of the emperor's sovereignty.
