Magdeburg is a central German city on the Elbe River and the capital of the state of Saxony-Anhalt.
The Gothic cathedral of Magdeburg is located in the center and is the burial church of Otto the Great, the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. It is the first Gothic cathedral designed from the beginning and the earliest completed Gothic cathedral on German soil. Construction began in 1207.
The Museum of Cultural History traces the importance of the city in the Middle Ages with exhibitions on archaeology and local history.
The Romanesque-style Monastery of Our Lady houses a contemporary art gallery and a sculpture park.
