About ‘Madeira's capital is Funchal’ by Edwin Kooren

Funchal is the five-hundred-year-old capital of Madeira, Portugal. The island is home to several attractions, and many of them can be found in the sunny south in the city of Funchal. This city of around 130,000 inhabitants is built against a cliff, in a bay. The island has many high cliffs, of which the coastline near Funchal has the lowest cliffs. A city with a lot of culture that takes you through several small streets with coloured houses to the city's most beautiful spots. It feels very Mediterranean with its cosy squares, pleasant streets, good food and plenty to do. Madeira's international airport is located here and the main cruise port can be found in Funchal Bay.
Did you know that the city of Funchal is named after Fennel? This is because Fennel means Funcho in Portuguese. This is because during the discovery of Madeira, a lot of fennel was found in the city. A well-known sweet that is therefore sold in Madeira are the delicious fennel sweets!
