The MIL Mi-26 (Russian: Ми-26), codename Halo is a Soviet/Russian transport helicopter and is in both civilian and military service. It is largest and heaviest series-built helicopter in the world. In the early 1970s, the Russian airline "Aeroflot" needed an improved Mi-6 helicopter to be able to transport large loads in difficult and remote areas inside and outside Russia. It can carry ninety fully equipped soldiers, two small vehicles or a twenty-ton container. The internal motor-driven hoist can lift a load of 500 kilograms. A total of 316 aircraft were manufactured in Rostov at the Rostvertol factories until 2015.
