I took this picture of our neighbour galaxy Andromeda with my Nikon d7500 and my skywatcher 72ed-pro telescope. This picture has a total exposure of 18h50min spread over 6 nights. Because of the long exposure you get a lot of detail and depth of view of the galaxy. You are actually drawn into the vortex.
The Andromeda galaxy or the Andromeda Nebula (M31) is a spiral galaxy, in the constellation Andromeda. The galaxy has the same shape as our own galaxy, the Milky Way, but is a lot bigger. The distance is estimated to be about 2.54 million lightyears, the diameter about 250,000 lightyears. The mass is estimated at 300 to 400 billion solar masses, the total mass including the halo at 1.2 trillion solar masses. Compared to the latest estimates of the total mass of the Milky Way, which is 1.9 trillion solar masses, M31 would thus be somewhat lighter, and much less dense. Together with the Milky Way and a number of smaller galaxies, the Andromeda Nebula forms the Local Group.
