Lying Banana

by Marieke Wouters

‘Lying Banana’ demonstrates just how extraordinary a simple subject can become when colour, form and composition come together. The reclining banana takes centre stage against a backdrop of soft pink hues, warm colours and graphic shapes. The minimalist approach lends this everyday object an almost sculptural presence, giving the work a look that is both playful and refined.

The atmosphere of the collage is relaxed, light and somewhat dreamy. The tranquil composition invites the viewer to slow down and pay attention to the small details that are often overlooked. The work embodies the philosophy of slow living, in which simplicity and mindfulness of the moment are central.

Like many of my collage works, this piece also finds its inspiration in ordinary, everyday observations. A piece of fruit on a table, a shadow on a wall, a colour combination that suddenly catches the eye. By magnifying these humble elements, a work of art emerges that is both recognisable and surprising.

The piece combines hand-torn paper, painted and printed areas of colour, and various textures. The visible layers and organic edges give the collage an authentic, handcrafted feel and reinforce the sense of spontaneity that is so characteristic of the medium.

‘Lying Banana’ fits perfectly into a modern interior, a minimalist living space, a creative workspace or a colourful design environment. It appeals to art lovers who appreciate contemporary collage art, simple still lifes and art that demonstrates that beauty is often hidden in the most ordinary things.
