Alkmaar is a city in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands, and the capital of the municipality of Alkmaar.
Alkmaar has a historic centre with 399 national monuments and 700 municipal monuments. An inhabitant of Alkmaar is called an Alkmaarder, but is referred to in the vernacular as a cheese head. The city is known as "the cheese town". From the beginning of April to the end of September a traditional cheese market is held every week.
The Waag in Alkmaar is a building on the Waagplein that has been used as a chapel and dare. The Hollands Kaasmuseum and the VVV Tourist Office are now housed in the building. The building has a tower with famous horsemen and a beautiful carillon. The building was designated a national monument in 1969. On the Waagplein the cheese market is held in the summer.
