The Old Town Hall of Lutherstadt Wittenberg is located in the centre of the historic old town on the market square. It is one of the most important buildings of the Saxon Renaissance and was the seat of the Wittenberg town council from the 16th century until 2000. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites (Castle Church, St Mary's Town Church, Melanchthon House and Luther House) are in the immediate vicinity.
The Luther monument has been on the market square since 1821. It is the first monument in Germany in which a non-noble person was publicly honoured with a free-standing statue.
