About the artwork

Cupid stands here as an angel with wings near Venus. Venus, the Roman goddess of love, originally an Old World vegetation goddess, protector of gardens and vineyards, was later identified with the Greek Aphrodite.

For his aristocratic patrons, Boucher made numerous paintings of intriguing female nudes, thinly veiled as Roman goddesses lounging in luxury. Bonnet's chalky color prints of similar subjects offered middle-class buyers opulent but affordable versions of Boucher's wildly popular images. Here, a tiny cupid begs Venus for his quiver as she stares teasingly at the viewer. Their feathered ends conceal and simultaneously draw attention to her nakedness. With Cupid's arrows in her hands, it is Venus - rather than Cupid - who has the power to arouse feelings of love.

The woman sits naked in a blue setting, so that the legs, hips, stomach, torso and breasts of the nude model are naked in the portrait.

All in all a sexy and sensual erotic picture with romance.

Louis-Marin Bonnet (Paris, France 1736 or 1743 - Saint-Mandé, 12 October 1793) was a French engraver, painter and publisher of prints in the Rococo style. He developed the way of pastel, an engraving process derived from the way of pencil.
