Los Angeles is one of my favorite cities to photograph. The variety is huge: from sprawling cityscapes to beaches and rugged nature. Because of the time difference, I am always awake early here, which is convenient, early on the road means peace and quiet.
This time I headed towards the Griffith Observatory. An iconic building, high on one of the hills surrounding L.A., overlooking the city. It was still dark when I arrived. No sunlight, just the soft glow of the city below and the silhouettes of the hills around me.
Instead of driving straight to the observatory, I chose to walk up via a hiking trail. A quiet route, and on the way you already get into the right focus. Once at the top, I had a nice vantage point to photograph the observatory, with the sprawling city as a backdrop.
The city lay still, the lights glowed in the distance, and the sky was still deep blue. With my camera and tripod, I could work in silence and capture the image as I saw it before me, without sunlight, but with atmosphere.
At home, the second part began: post-processing. Contrast, sharpness, and the right balance between dark and detail. If the end result matches what I felt there, then I know it's right.
A piece of Los Angeles, captured in stillness and overview. Maybe it will bring some peace to your wall too.
