The Long Neck people, also known as the Kayan or Karen, are an ethnic minority group primarily residing in the mountainous regions of northern Thailand, with a significant community near Chiang Mai. They are known for their unique tradition in which women wear brass rings around their necks from a young age. Over time, more rings are added, creating the appearance of an elongated neck. This practice is not only a beauty ideal but also carries cultural and spiritual significance.
The Long Neck people often live in villages that are open to tourists, providing a source of income through handicrafts, such as weaving traditional clothing and selling souvenirs. While this tradition attracts visitors, it is essential to recognize that many Long Neck people in Thailand are refugees from Myanmar, where they originally come from.
Critics sometimes view this tourism as exploitative, but for many Kayan women, it is a way to preserve their culture and support their families in challenging circumstances.
