About "Lómagnúpur: Keeper in Ice and Legends"

by Gerry van Roosmalen

About the artwork

Lómagnúpur towers over the winter landscape like a timeless monument. Its sheer cliffs rise from the plain, reflected in the partly frozen lake stretching out before it. The ice, with its cracks and reflective surfaces, seems like a bridge between worlds-between the icy silence of today and the myths of days gone by.

According to the *Njáls saga*, this mountain was once home to Járngrímur, one of Iceland's guardian spirits. In the ice, his presence still seems palpable, as if the mountain itself were a waiting giant, caught in the cold but ever vigilant. Icelanders believe he once appeared to protect the country from invaders, and in the reflection of the ice, it seems as if he could come back to life at any moment.

Winter makes Lómagnúpur even more unapproachable. When the wind chases across the ice and clouds gather around its summit, the mountain seems to reveal its secrets only in whispers. But in a clear moment, when the ice reflects the sky and sunlight briefly strokes the rock face, it reveals its true face: that of a protector, a watchman over the land, deeply rooted in the sagas and nature of Iceland.
