About the artwork

Lioness (Leo Panthera) in tall grass in Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe looking for prey.

The lion (Panthera leo), also known as the Lioness in the case of the female sex, is a large feline found in parts of Africa and Asia. Lions are powerful animals with a sturdy build. Males often have an imposing mane, while females have a more streamlined appearance. they mainly inhabit savannahs, grasslands and open woodlands. They are social animals and are often found in groups, known as troops. Lions are carnivores and feed mainly on large herbivores such as zebra's, wildebeest and antelope and young elephants. Females are usually more active in hunting than males.

Hwange National Park is the largest national park in Zimbabwe and is located in the west of the country, near the border with Botswana. The park covers a vast area of about 14,600 square kilometres and is known for its diverse landscapes, ranging from forests and grasslands to dry desert-like areas.

Hwange is also known for its large population of elephants, making it one of the best places in Africa to observe these majestic animals in the wild. There are several waterholes scattered throughout the park, which is essential for attracting animals especially during the dry season.
