About the artwork

Lightning, Schalwijk, The Netherlands

Schalkwijk is a village within the municipality of Houten, in the Dutch province of Utrecht, located near the city of Utrecht. The village was created after various areas such as Vuijlcop, Waalseveld, Bieshaar, Tetwijk, Goyerveld, Kanenbroek and Blokhoven were reclaimed in 1130. [2] Schalkwijk was a municipality of its own from 1812 until it merged with Houten in 1962. Since 1943, Schalkwijk has had the mayor of Houten as mayor. Schalkwijk had 1,973 inhabitants in 2005, and in 2018 the former municipality only had 1,965 inhabitants according to the CBS.

Schalkwijk is the central village on the island of Schalkwijk, an agricultural polder area that is surrounded by the waters of the Lek, the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal and the Lek Canal. The place is a ribbon village along the Schalkwijk law. In the middle it is intersected by the Utrecht - 's-Hertogenbosch railway line. Here is also the Brink. The eastern end is on the Lek near the hamlet of De Heul (Houten). The ferry to Culemborg is only a few kilometers away. The sporadic outgrowth of Schalkwijk has taken place since the 1960s to the west of the railway in the polder Bieshaar, where a small residential area has arisen.
Schalkwijk was mined around 1130 under the leadership of the van Schalkwijk family. These had their home base in Schalkwijk castle. Where the first castle has been is unknown. In 1304 the owner Bertold (Gijsbert) van Schalkwijk became involved in the Battle of the Lek.
