About the artwork
Dee Grathemermolen is a watermill in the center of Grathem on the Uffelse Beek, also known as the Aabeek, which has its origins in the Belgian Kempen. Both the mill and the mill house have played an important role in the neighborhood of Grathem in the past.
I in the 13th century the mill of the Thorn pen was in Grathem. Afterwards this mill came into the possession of the De Borchgrave d'Altena family who lived at Groot Buggenum castle in Grathem. Later the mill became the property of the De Geloes d'Elsloo family. In 1874 the mill was sold to the tenant miller and the Grathemermolen was radically modernized.
The mill was converted into a turbine mill in 1915, and a Stockport suction gas engine was installed as an auxiliary drive in 1916. Electric grinding took place from the connection to the electricity network in 1930.
The waterwheel that is now on display was replaced in 1995 according to the old example and linked to the cast-iron interior of the former burnt Brunssummer Mill. This interior from 1866 is the oldest cast millwork for millstones in the Netherlands. However, the turbine mill is still grindy.
The Grathemermolen is owned by the municipality of Leudal and can be visited. There is also a shop in the mill where mill and mill related products are sold. The mill was transferred to the Limburg Landscape at the end of 2017.
