About the artwork

This image splashes off the canvas with raw energy and uncompromising power. A roller derby-jammer storms forward, fists clenched, eyes full of fire. Her braid swishes behind her, her muscles tense, her movement determined. The motto above her head leaves no doubt: "Life is short - Jam hard!"

The colours are simple but powerful: red as the background of struggle and passion, black as contour and contrast, beige as skin tone. This limited but bright colour palette gives the work a vintage poster atmosphere with a modern message. The style is reminiscent of hand-printed linos and activist prints from the punk and DIY scene.

This image is a powerful statement for any derby player with fire in her heart.

Roller derby is a fast-paced, physical team sport played on roller skates (quads) on an oval track. Two teams of five players each compete against each other in short rounds of play, called "jams".
Each team has one "jammer" (identified by a star on its helmet) who can score points by overtaking opponents on the track. The other players are "blockers" and try to help their own jammer and stop the opponent's jammer. This is done by strategic pushing, blocking and positioning.
The sport is intense, tactical and spectacular, with a strong sense of community and often a distinctive, punk-like culture surrounding it. It is mainly played by women, but there are also mixed and men's matches.
