Close-up of the leaves of a banana tree. At home, I have had the same banana plant for many years. Every year, the plant makes several new leaves that grow straight up from the centre of the trunk still coiled like a stem. The moment the further leaf opens it unwinds itself and only then can you see the size of the fresh leaf. Every time a new leaf opens at the top, an old leaf dies off at the bottom. I find this fascinating to watch. It becomes even more beautiful when the light from the back shines through the new leaf. The endless fine lines running from the grain to the outside of the leaf, right through the light brown spots on the leaf. This ensures that each new leaf has its own unique 'imprint' so each fresh leaf is a new surprise.
