About ‘Leaf from a tulip book, Jacob Marrel - ca. 1640’
Flowers were precious, and tulips were the most precious. Tulip bulbs were eagerly collected in the 17th century. Large sums of money were paid for special specimens. The leaf with four tulips was originally part of a tulip book. The exact function of tulip books is unknown. They could have been catalogues from which an interested buyer could choose, or drawn inventories of tulip collections.
