In earlier times fresh and salt water flowed into each other in the Lauwerszee. Fear of flooding led to the construction of a dam in 1969. On the former seabed, a beautiful new landscape was created, a real bird paradise. Nature in the Lauwersmeer is so special that the area has been designated a National Park. Visitors are welcome day and night. In addition to Activity Centre Lauwersnest and Het Informatie Paviljoen in Lauwersoog, Lauwersmeer National Park has an information network of certified National Park Lauwersmeer hosts and hostesses.
