The Athabasca glacier is one of the six most important foothills of the Columbia ice field in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The glacier is about 6 km long and covers an area of 6 km². The ice is between 90 and 300 meters thick and global warming has caused the glacier to withdraw more than 1.5 km over the past 125 years and lose more than half of its volume.
Due to its proximity to the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93), between Banff and Jasper, it is one of the most visited glaciers in Canada.
