View of a beautiful frozen lake in Swedish Lapland. Lapland or Samenland is the cultural region traditionally inhabited by the Sami (also known as Lapps). While the Sami have several languages of their own (the Sami languages), they do not have their own state. In fact, Lapland stretches across the northernmost part of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. Lapland is so close to the polar regions that its winters are long and icy cold. In the winter months, the sun does not rise there (polar night) and in the summer months, the sun does not set (midnight sun).
