Directly opposite the railway station of Culemborg is the district Lanxmeer. For the Netherlands and abroad, this is an example of 'sustainable building'.
In Lanxmeer there is a large variety of different houses, situated together in courtyards with communal gardens. The courtyards are car-free. Children can play safely and residents organize barbecues and other activities together.
Environmentally friendly materials such as FSC-approved wood, natural paint and natural insulation material have been used in the construction of the houses. On the roofs there are solar collectors for hot water supply and electricity. Use is also made of biological water purification through reed beds spread throughout the neighbourhood. Rainwater is collected in ponds and reused.
