This picture was taken in Marken.
Marken is a former island in the Markermeer, connected to the mainland by a dam since 1957.
The village belongs to the municipality of Waterland in the Dutch province of North Holland.
It was an independent municipality until 1991.
For at least a century, the former fishing village has been a tourist attraction.
Marken's distinctive traditional costume has contributed to this. The wooden houses on stilts are characteristic.
Even older are the so-called "yards", artificial elevations on which people lived.
Marken forms one living and residential area, but is divided into several hamlets.
