The Limburg Hill Country is characterised by a rural setting with plateaus and stream valleys. Meadows, orchards and fields alternate with woodlands, hawthorn hedges and hedgerows here and there, interrupted by farms, hamlets, villages and towns. This beautiful valley of the river Jeker just outside Maastricht shows the view towards the Flemish Limburg village of Kanne, the region where I was born and where I spent the first 25 happy years of my life. Shaped by traditions and Burgundian life, fun, church, music and carnival. A region where people always look south, people with a Mediterranean bravado and singing dialect like the rolling hills. A mighty fine piece of the Netherlands, the gateway to southern Europe. South Limburg. A landscape Vincent van Gogh never visited. I would have loved to have seen it in his colourful and dashing impressionist painting style.
