About the artwork

Landing Boeing B-29 Superfortress "Fifi".

The picture shows the Boeing B-29 Superfortress "Fifi", for a long time the only B-29 still flying, but since a few years "Doc" joined it. Work by "Doc" can also be found in my shop.

The Boeing B-29 Superfortress is a US bomber used in World War II to fight Japan from bases in China and the Mariana Islands (on Guam and two islands of the Northern Mariana Islands, Saipan and Tinian). Among other things, this type of bomber was used to drop the first atomic bomb over Hiroshima on 6 August 1945; this bomber was called the "Enola Gay". Three days later, this type of bomber was used to drop the second atomic bomb, this time over Nagasaki by the "Bockscar" bomber. Both aircraft took off from Tinian.

The B-29 was designed (as the Boeing Model 345) to the requirements of the US Air Force, which needed a long-range bomber capable of flying at high altitudes. The first flight took place on 21 September 1942 (XB-29).

The gun turrets of the B-29 were all remotely controlled, unlike the B-17.

This photo was taken on 29 August 2015 during the Thunder over Michigan Airshow.
