About "La Chaise Parisienne / French bistro chairs"

by Ingrid de Vos - Boom

About the artwork

Anyone who has ever been to France will recognise them: these are the iconic bistro chairs on the terraces, or La Chaise Parisienne

The red and cream French wicker bistro chairs are an iconic piece of furniture associated with French café and bistro culture. They have an interesting history dating back to the 19th century.

This first chair was handmade in 1885 in the 20th arrondissement at 180 Rue des Pyrénées in Paris by Louis Drucker.
Here, he made hand-woven furniture from bamboo and rattan.
In 1919, he published his first catalogue and the result was that he received orders from luxury hotels, but his furniture was also sold at department store Samaritaine.
His chairs can be found on the terraces of famous Parisian café-restaurants such as Les Deux Margots and Café de Flore, among others.

Maison Drucker's terrace chairs can be seen not only in Paris, by the way, but all over France. And how nice it is to sit on such'a chair and watch French life pass by while enjoying a café and crêpe or a glass of wine.

I took this photo on the terrace of café La Diligence in Vannes, Brittany in September 2023.
