About ‘Kōno Bairei – Kingfisher on a Berry-Bearing Branch (1881)’ by Peter Balan
A kingfisher is perched on a twig bearing red berries. The small fish-eater’s vibrant plumage immediately catches the eye. The page is taken from Bairei’s ‘Album of a Hundred Birds’ (Bairei hyakuchō gafu) from 1881. Kōno Bairei (1844–1895) was one of Kyoto’s most influential painters and teachers during the Meiji period.
