The koala or marsupial bear (Phascolarctos cinereus) is a marsupial in the family koala's (Phascolarctidae) that occurs in eastern Australia. The family name Phascolarctos is derived from the Ancient Greek words φάσκωλος and ἄρκτος meaning "pouch" and "bear" respectively. The Latin cinereus means "ash-coloured".
