The Knotweed Fritillary, also known as Melitaea phoebe, is a species of butterfly found in Europe. It is a medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan of about 40 to 50 millimetres.
The butterfly is known for its striking orange-brown colour and the beautiful pearly spots on its wings. Males often have a dark scent plume on the forewings.
The Knotweed Fritillary lives mainly in flowery grasslands and forest clearings. The caterpillars feed on a variety of plants, including knotweed (Centaurea jacea), from which the butterfly gets its name.
This butterfly species has a flight period that usually starts in June and ends in August. They are active during sunny days and are often seen collecting nectar on flowers.
The Knotweed Fritillary is an important species for conservation. Disturbance of their habitat and the disappearance of suitable plants can threaten their survival.
