The kingfisher is a small, colourful bird known for its bright colours and lightning-fast fishing. An iconic species of clear rivers and streams, it is found in large parts of Europe and Asia.
Unmistakably blue and orange coloured. Rather plumply built with short tail and a large head and beak. White throat and side neck. Wings and crown greenish blue with bright blue back and rump. Often sits upright on a low-hanging branch above the water, lurking for fish. Flies over the water calling loudly and can then be easily seen. Females have an orange-red bill base, in males it is black.
