This photo shows a kingfisher, the little king of the wetland, sitting quietly on its lookout. Your gaze is first drawn to its striking blue and orange feathers, but on closer inspection, you see the carefully chosen composition, in which the fine textures of the moss and the blurred lines of the background highlight the bird's natural habitat.

This picture was taken on an early, quiet morning where the tranquillity of nature was the inspiration. The kingfisher, often just a flash of colour along the water, was captured here in all its calmness, allowing a rare moment of stillness and contemplation to be shared.

This photo exudes an atmosphere of calm and focus. The moment when the kingfisher seems to forget about the world around him and concentrate on the waters below gives a sense of concentration and meditation that I want to share with the viewer. It is an invitation to pause for a moment in our often hectic lives.

In taking this photograph, I used natural light and a shallow depth of field, bringing the kingfisher into sharp focus against a softly faded background. It is a technique that honours the subject and gives depth to the image.
