About the artwork

A metal kettle with a piece of woven material. Kasumigaseki, mentioned in the title, was a district in Edo (present-day Tokyo) known for the many daimyô residences and houses of the higher samurai. The objects depicted in this print probably refer to the wealthy inhabitants of Kasumigaseki.

Color woodcut.
It is a surimono - a luxurious print in which an image is combined with one or more poems. When printing a surimono, thicker paper, blind embossing and metal pigments, such as copper and silver powder, were often used. The prints were often commissioned by poets and given as exclusive gifts to friends and relations.
