About ‘Kasteel van de hertogen van Brabant, Turnhout’ by Photo Dante

Tijdens de wandeling Turnhout by Night op 24 januari 2015 gefotografeerd.
"Het Kasteel van de hertogen van Brabant is gelegen in het centrum van Turnhout.

Het kasteel stamt uit de 12e eeuw, en werd herhaaldelijk verbouwd. In de tijd van Maria van Hongarije, landvoogdes van de Nederlanden, was het een "Hof van plaisanterie" .

In de 18e en 19e eeuw raakte het kasteel in verval. De provincie kocht het gebouw rond het begin van de 20e eeuw van de gemeente en ging na de Eerste Wereldoorlog onder leiding van provinciaal architect Jules Taeymans tot een grondige restauratie over.

Tegenwoordig is het gerecht er gehuisvest.

In de grote rechtszaal hangen muurschilderingen van Karel Boom, die het gerecht ten tijde van Maria van Hongarije voorstellen. De gangen en zalen zijn getooid met historische relieken." Wikipedia
