"View of an Italian landscape"
Through a hole in a mountain chain we see a mountain landscape with a path with people walking with a horse. In the rock hangs a clock, a bell.
Karl Friedrich Schinkel (Neuruppin, 13 March 1781 - Berlin, 9 October 1841) was one of the most important German architects. He was also a painter and draughtsman, urban planner, set designer and furniture designer. He knew the history of architecture - around that time an emerging scientific discipline - and designed in both classical and Gothic style without imitating existing buildings. In 1813, King Frederick William III conceived the award the Iron Cross, and Schinkel designed the decoration to go with it. In 1815 Schinkel was appointed advisor to the king (Secret Council) and from this time on he could devote himself entirely to architecture.
