KLM Airbus A330-200 with a special story.
Registration: PH-AON.
Aircraft name: Museumplein - Amsterdam.
In 2008, this aircraft in an Air Force grey colour was presented by Airbus to the U.S. Air Force to learn about its flying characteristics. The US Air Force tested the aircraft extensively and reacted very enthusiastically to it as it completely fit the specifications they had in mind for a new tanker aircraft. In fact, a contract had already been signed for the delivery of 179 KC-45As. Due to a protest from Boeing, the specifications were rewritten to exactly fit a Boeing 767. As a result, the delivery did not go ahead and the U.S. Air Force ordered KC-46 tanker aircraft from Boeing.
After the test period with the US Air Force, the aircraft was stored with Airbus at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport. In 2012, KLM succeeded by signing a favourable lease agreement after which the aircraft was included in its fleet.
