After Félicien Rops, Ruelas made the work of the courtesan - naked, dressed in a big hat and with her legs dressed in black stockings, where a pig serves as a guide.
In a symbolic garden and in the shade of a tree stands a seductress, Circe of Eve, dressed in a modern style with a hat, chaps and black stockings. Like a circus tuner, she uses a whip to control and guide the movement of a pig circling the length of an elliptical path. A monkey, mounted on a stone along the road, just above the pig, watches the show. Both creatures have a long symbolic tradition: the monkey symbolises vice, while the pig represents voraciousness, greed and lust (he barely devours one acorn and tries to swallow the next). The relationship of both animals with lust, and their eternal around the dominatrix, meaningfully symbolizes slavery in the flesh: an instinctive stage of confusion with matter, which caused particular suspicion in the male sensitivity of the late century.
Julio Ruelas (21 June 1870 - 16 September 1907) was a Mexican graphic artist, painter and draughtsman. Ruelas was the most important illustrator of the magazine Revista Moderna and is most associated with Mexican symbolism. Around 1892 he left and went to Karlsruhe, Germany.
