During his lifetime, Pascin refused to be labelled as part of any artistic movement and therefore integrated different styles into his works, such as expressionism and cubism. Femme et Fleurs, a portrait of his wife Hermine David, demonstrates this fusion of techniques; the artist reduced shapes to simplified forms while infusing the work with emotional qualities. Hermine was an artist herself, best known for her watercolour landscapes and dry needle etchings. She met her future husband in 1907 when she visited Pascin's flat to show off her 18th-century-style miniatures painted on ivory. The two began a romance and travelled extensively together; Hermine would eventually join Pascin during his American sojourn.
Julius Mordecai Pinkas (Vidin, Bulgaria, 31 March 1885 - Paris, France, 20 June 1930) was a Bulgarian-American painter and draughtsman of mixed descent: his father was a Sephardic Jew, his mother was of Serbian-Italian origin. Pascin's work, which is sometimes counted as expressionism, includes portraits and mostly erotic-tinged and satirical images, characterised by intermingling delicate colour shades.
