José Cândido Dominguez Alvarez (Porto, 23 February 1906 - Porto, 12 April 1942), was a painter of second Portuguese modernism.
The son of a Portuguese man of Galician descent and a Galician woman from Pontevedra, Dominguez Alvarez was born in Porto in 1906 and acquired Portuguese citizenship in 1936 to escape the Spanish Civil War.
At the heart of Dominguez Alvarez's painting is "a naivety of shapes and colours" driven by an unusual intuition.
