About "Jindřich Štyrský, Three madmen, 1921"

by Atelier Liesjes

About the artwork

Jindřich Štyrský's 1921 painting "Three Madmen" (Three Madmen) is an abstract composition showing three figures. The figures are depicted as geometric shapes and a muted colour palette consisting of brown, yellow and ear orange colours. The figures are stylistic and overlapping, creating a sense of depth and complexity. The composition has influences of cubism, with fragments and overlapping planes suggesting different perspectives. In the lower right corner is the monogram "J. Štyrský 21" is visible.

This painting is interesting for its early modern style and the way it abstractly depicts human forms. The work highlights Štyrský's artistic exploration and his ability to visually express abstract ideas.

Jindřich Štyrský (Dolní Čermná, Czech Republic 11 August 1899 - Prague, 21 March 1942) was a Czechoslovak painter, poet, editor, photographer and surrealist draughtsman and creator of modern art.

His work is known for his dreamy and fantastic images, often exploring themes of eroticism, mysticism and the subconscious. Štyrský was a founding member of the Surrealist Group of Czechoslovakia and worked closely with his artistic partner Toyen (Marie Čermínová)
