The Joint Strike Fighter programme (JSF programme) was a US Department of Defence programme to replace the F-16 Fighting Falcon and other tactical combat aircraft prevalent in the 1990s with a new "next-generation"combat aircraft. The battle for the contract eventually went between the Boeing X-32 and the Lockheed Martin X-35, with Lockheed Martin emerging victorious. Following this, the name F-35 Lightning II was chosen for the X-35 and the JSF programme became the F-35 Lightning II programme
