There are many tomb sculptures on the graves of the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris. Yet there are some that stand out, and one of them is undoubtedly the sculpture on the grave of Cino del Duca. This Italian businessman made a fortune as a film producer and publisher of several magazines.
The sculpture by Italian sculptor Francesco Messina shows a standing version of a Pietà where Michelangelo Buonarroti made a seated Mary in 1499. Pietà is Italian for pity, loving reverence. In fine art, it is used as a term for the depiction of Mary with her son who has just died. In contrast to many graves at Cimetière du Père-Lachaise, Del Duca's tomb is still state of the art.
