Jeanne-Elisabeth Sellon, Lady Tyrrel, Jean-Etienne Liotard
Like Liotard himself, Jeanne-Elisabeth Sellon was born in Geneva to Huguenot parents, who had been forced to flee France in 1685. She married an English baronet, Sir Charles Tyrell, in 1726. This portrait was almost certainly done during a visit to Geneva, probably in 1746, and is one of the more imposing of Liotard’s earlier portraits, with all the clarity and attention to detail that are the hallmarks of his best works.
